School Leaders: What Story Does Your School Tell?

I am a huge Jay Shetty fan. He has such a great understanding of storytelling, so I thought what better way to kick off this month’s theme at Onward, Tell Empowering Stories than with this Jay Shetty video: Why we need to tell more stories.

As school leaders we need to remember Jay’s message: “If you want to understand a culture listen to the stories, but if you want to change a culture, change the stories!”

In Chapter 3 of Onward, Elena talks about Organizational narratives. Her message is so powerful as we start a new year. “When you’re trying to do something new or different, whether in your classroom, department, school, or district, it’s critical that you tell the story of what’s happening. If you don’t, other people will do it for you, and you might not like the narrative.”

So as you start this school year, remember that “storytellers have always held key positions in society; the stories we craft predict our futures, encapsulate our legacies, and impact our resilience. You have a choice, so tell powerful stories.”
