Who Do You Choose to Surround Yourself With?

Metaphors are so helpful in providing people with something to grab onto especially as they are trying to make sense or find meaning in their lives. As a coach I use metaphors frequently with my clients who think in this way as well. So when I came across this video, I knew I had to share. As we work through the habit of building community, we have to ask ourselves, who are we choosing to have in our lives?

I’ve shared other Jay Shetty videos on this site because I find his messages are often so impactful in my life. This video is no different. In Are You a Leaf, Branch, or Root? he talks about the different people that we have in our lives and the purpose that they serve. He challenges that we need to surround ourselves with people who contribute to our overall emotional, mental and physical, well-being. This concept we know, but the comparison he makes to people in our lives that are like leaves, and those like branches and roots is so powerful. He reminds us that we choose who is in our life and that when you get some roots, hold on to them. But the rest of it, be ok to let it go.

And all of this just makes me think of our monthly mantra for September: I surround myself with with loving people. I can choose the people I allow into my life. I choose to surround myself with people who make me better.

Reflect on this, who are the leaves, branches and roots in your life and to who are you a leaf, branch, or root?
